Indian Musicology Day
A day to cherish India's contribution to the world's knowledge of music, dance and theatre.
India is not just a great nation but a continent from which knowledge and nobility, peace and perseverance, creativity and wisdom have flowed. This land has preserved and nurtured that sattva since its earliest history. Indian musicology, which holds our music, dance and theatre, is revered as India's contribution to the world's knowledge and way of life.
Yet no day had been set apart to cherish it and carry it forward. So, from 2022, 9 May of every year is declared Indian Musicology Day, in Indian languages Bhāratīya Saṅgīta Śāstra Dina.
We mark the day with music, dance and āgamic discussion; we bring śāstra knowledge to light through research and publication; and we honour eminent śāstra scholars of our time.
Mahāmahopādhyāya Padmaśrī Dr. R. Sathyanarayana
We honour the legacy of the great musicologist and Indologist Dr. R. Sathyanarayana. His lifelong work, vast learning and dedicated tapas enriched every Indian knowledge system. His contributions still resonate, and these celebrations are a tribute to his life and to the path he set for research, reconstruction and critical editions of Bhāratīya śāstra.
2026–27: the centenary year. On Indian Musicology Day, 9 May 2026, Brahmavidya launched the Abdipūrva celebrations leading to his centenary on 9 May 2027, with seminars, workshops, research discussions, Vākyārtha Sabhās and concerts through the year.
