Letters rooted in an inscription.
Illustrations built into the font.
A Kannada display family shaped by the curves of a rock inscription, with four illustrated symbols drawn into its character set.
The type studio
Type or paste Kannada below and see it in BVMatanga. Use your Kannada keyboard; this preview displays Unicode text and does not transliterate English.
Your text stays in this browser; the preview does not send it to a server.
From stone to type
BVMatanga began with the Kannada inscription “ಮತಂಗೇಶ್ವರ” and “ದೇವರದಿಡ್ಡಿ”. Its broad curves, open joins and sweeping upper strokes became the starting point for a contemporary display typeface.
Selected letters were redrawn from the supplied references, then the style was extended across Kannada vowels, consonants, vowel forms, conjunct components and numerals.
Use it for cultural programmes, invitations, book covers, devotional designs and expressive headings. Regular and Bold share the same underlying letter forms, with two distinct stroke weights.
An inscription-inspired interpretation, rather than a complete historical facsimile. Letters absent from the reference are extrapolated; the font is derived from Noto Serif Kannada and retains its shaping infrastructure.
The signature collection
These are scalable outlines embedded in the font. Insert them like text, choose a colour, and use them as decorative artwork. The detailed illustrations are identical in Regular and Bold.

Use generous display sizes, especially for the full standing scene. Private-use symbols display correctly only with BVMatanga. Copying a symbol copies its character, not an image.

A few useful details
Use “Copy symbol” above, paste into your document, and apply BVMatanga. In Word on Windows, type the four-digit code, select it, then press Alt+X. You can also use your design application’s Glyphs or Insert Symbol panel. The four codes are U+E000, U+E001, U+E002 and U+E003.
Yes. Use a standard Unicode Kannada keyboard. The font retains OpenType shaping for vowel signs and conjuncts. Older ASCII-encoded Kannada text must be converted to Unicode before using this font. The preview is not a keyboard or transliteration tool.
Yes. The complete package contains Regular and Bold WOFF2 files and a CSS example. The illustrations can be inserted with HTML references such as  for Matangi. Give meaningful illustrations accessible text labels; hide purely decorative ones from screen readers.
Embed the font in your PDF where supported, or convert the finished lettering and symbols to outlines. Without BVMatanga, private-use symbols may appear as boxes or unrelated characters. Separate SVG illustrations are included for artwork interchange. Proofread and inspect your final export at its intended size.
Each style has 704 glyphs and maps 449 characters, including 91 Kannada-block codepoints and four private-use symbols. Some glyphs are internal shaping components rather than separately typed characters. The font is distributed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; keep the included OFL.txt with redistributed fonts and follow its terms. Noto Serif Kannada is the upstream font, and the four illustrations are traced from supplied artwork.
